Gretchen Steele Pratt

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Purdue University, and my poems have been published in many of the top literary journals and anthologies in the U.S. such as Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, The Southern Review, Boston Review, and Gettysburg Review; my first book of poems won the Anhinga Prize for Poetry.

I have been featured on The Academy of American Poets, Poetry Daily, and in The Best Small Fictions. You can view my full publication history here.

What I Offer . . .

I’ve spent a lot of time searching out examples of commissioned wedding poems, and I’ve noticed a few things. The poems are often:

  • overly sentimental
  • lacking in concrete imagery
  • vague/not specific to the couple
  • sing-songy and/or rhyming
  • somewhat cheesy

It’s not easy to find a poet with a strong publication history who specializes in wedding poems and writes in a contemporary literary style.

If you’re looking for ‘greeting card’ type poems, that is not what I offer. I will create a poem completely unique to who you are as a couple, written in a contemporary literary style.
